The World's Game

Welcome -- Bienvenue -- Wilkommen -- 欢迎 -- Benvenuto -- Добро пожаловать -- Vítejte -- مرحبا

Hello there and welcome to my website! As you may or may not know, soccer (known as football or fútbol outside of the United States and Canada) is far and away the world's most popular and widely played sport. It is played regularly by over 240 million people in more than 200 countries worldwide, and watched at the stadium and on television by billions more. But soccer was not always the global phenomenon that it is today. Like all sports, soccer arose from humble origins and steadily built up a fan-base and attracted players. Over time, it gradually rose to take its place among the mighty cultural institutions of our world. This site is dedicated to studying just how and why that came to be.

About Me

Picture
My name is Ryan Williams; I am a freshman at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Finance and Economics. Though originally from the Chicago-area suburb of Hinsdale, during the school year I now make my home in the best dorm on campus, Duncan Hall. Soccer has always been one of my greatest passions, as I have played it for the better part of the last ten years and am an avid follower of my favorite club, Manchester United. I recognize that I am somewhat rare among my fellow Americans in having this affinity for soccer however, and this website arose out of a desire to learn why that is, as well as why the rest of the world does not share our antipathy towards the World's Game.
